Another zero day well spent, and quite a bit more exploring on this one than the last.
We would certainly recommend Franklin, NC as a place to take a zero day. While it is a little spread out, there is plenty to see/eat/drink right in the downtown area of this nice little town.
We began our day out by walking down to a little diner called Ms. Lois’ restaurant for some breakfast. Between the two of us, we got bacon, eggs, sausage, hash browns, pancakes, biscuits, and gravy… a real breakfast feast. As everywhere else we’ve visited, the service was fast and super friendly. The food came out quickly, and was very good. I have had a craving for some pancakes, and these more than met that need. A word of advice, leave the credit card at home, and hit up the atm ahead of time… this is a cash only joint. Definitely worth the walk from downtown.
After breakfast we headed back into town and stopped by Outdoor 76, one of the local outfitters.
This place is THE place to go if you’re having foot problems. They are experts in boot fittings, and can help identify many problems. They even have a “club” out back with about 12 beers on tap abs a stage for live music. I’m hoping they’ll offer franchise opportunities so I can open up one of these stores up north.
The rest of the day was spent back at Lazy Hiker Brewery, chatting with some other thru-hikers, and enjoying some more beers. I enjoyed everything I tried here. I especially enjoyed the pale ale and the golden ale… both tasted especially delicious out on the patio in the sun.
After the brewery, and a few beers back at Outdoor 76, we ended our evening with a few burgers at the Motor Company Grill.
This place has the feel of a 60s burger joint. They’ve got a bunch of creative burgers, sandwiches, and salads. Casey had the special burger of the day, which wad topped with fried green tomatoes and pimento cheese… yum. I had the BBQ burger which was topped with cheddar, Swiss, bacon, and pulled pork. Thank goodness we’re heading back to the trail to burn off some of these calories.
I kind of wish we could spend another night in Franklin. This was a great little town to explore, and had everything a hiker needs to recharge, relax, and resupply. I would highly encourage all thru-hikers to plan a zero day in Franklin, NC.
How wonderful to be included in your journey! My visions were of just days of walking and nights of camping. I enjoy the beautiful scenes and the well written narrative, Alex. HAPPY TRAILS, dear Casey and Alex, (corny but sincere) Love, Grandma Nita
No ice cream cravings? I’m waiting for the day that you are hiking beer in! Have fun guys!
