Day 36: 5/15/16 (Virtual AT 2020 Day 43)

So, we got a late start today, but it was worth it. First of all, we got to sleep in until almost 8 in that big, comfy king size bed. Then at 8 we went downstairs and we had just an amazing breakfast. Seriously… if you’re ever anywhere near Roan, TN stay at Mountain Harbour B&B just for the breakfast. They had various homemade baked goods like cinnamon rolls and apple pie, home fries, various types of sausage, homemade biscuits and  gravy, and… the star of the show… French toast with this honey pecan sauce. It was all so good. Since we didn’t have to check out until 11, we went back up to our room after breakfast and just relaxed for a few more hours… and took another shower just because we could.

When we finally hit the trail, a bit after 11:30, we found it to be a very nice, but cool day. We only did 9.6 miles today, but none of it was particularly difficult. There were a few muddy spots that were a bit challenging, including one where my foot got wet, but overall it was a pretty pleasant hike. And, we hit 400 miles today. We’re camped out about a mile north of the Mountaineer Shelter at mile 403.

With it being a shorter day, we arrived into camp a bit early. We probably could’ve pushed on for a few more miles, but Casey’s calves are sore, and my feet have started getting fatigue again. I think our superfeet insoles are starting to wear down. We’ll be looking into replacements in Damascus. Speaking of gear failures… my sleeping pad is getting worse. I inflated it when we set up the tent, then by the time we came back to go to bed, it needed a top off. Then in the time I was writing, it needed another top off. I’ll probably wake up at least twice tonight to re inflate this thing. I think the leak is up near the mouth piece so we tried wrapping it up with duct tape… we’ll see if it helps… just 66 more miles to Damascus where I can replace this thing.
