We woke up this morning to the sound of rain… not a fun sound to hear when you’ve got to pack up a wet rainfly. And when it rains, everything just sort of gets damp… I think I’ve said that before…
There really isn’t much to say about today, except it rained all morning, but cleared up a bit in the afternoon, though still pretty overcast for most of the day. When we stopped for lunch at the Vandeventer Shelter we saw a few mice scurrying about, including one that I had a bit of a standoff with until he retreated back into the voids of the cinder blocks. Near the end of the day we witnessed a large owl take flight in the woods, and perch on a branch to keep an eye on us as we passed.
We did our longest day yet today, 23.1 miles. We’re camped out in a stealth campsite not too far from a road. We can hear some dogs barking, from what I presume is a house nearby. We have decided to go for Damascus tomorrow instead of breaking it up into two days. It’s about 22 miles to town from where we are. We’ll be waking up early to try and beat at least some of the weather that’s supposed to come in again.
Damascus today! If the Mexican place is open in town grab a burrito, a pint, and homemade tortilla chips! There is a gentleman that lived in the town his trail name is Lone Wolf or something like that. He is pretty much a legend on the AT. He hiked it like 9 times or something. Anyways he grew up in RI and we hit it off immediately. A true New Englander! Ask around if you need a connection! The gear store guys know of him. Hope, you get the pad issue fixed! Grab some seam tape. It’s lightweight and will help if it happens again!
Burritos were excellent.
