Day 49: 5/28/16 (Virtual AT 2020 Day 56)

The morning started off foggy, but almost immediately warm and humid. As the fog burned off, the day just got warmer. For the most part, the trail wasn’t too terribly difficult, except for really the last mile or two, which was very rocky again, which is really starting to take a toll on our feet.

It’s definitely time to change out the shoes. I’m thinking that all the foot fatigue and new blisters are being caused by new spots rubbing in the boots from our feet changing shape. Unfortunately we’re going to need to hike about 100 more miles in what we’ve got now to make it to Daleville where we can visit the outfitter to take a look at some options.

We’re spending tonight at Woods Hole Hostel, which is up in the hills on a back country road, about a half mile from the trail. When we arrived we had JUST missed the ride into town for dinner, which was a bit of a bummer. But guess who was hanging around when we arrived… our old friend Starbucks! We met her just before Hot Springs, and all shared a room when we got there. She shared some of her bread and cheese with us, which are both homemade right here at the hostel.

When the cars finally got back from dinner, the owners were able to make us a couple of giant smoothies, which are made with their homemade ice cream, and real fruit. They’re also huge, and basically turned into our dinner. We also picked up our resupply packages which have more than enough food to get us to Daleville. So much, in fact, that we were able to share a bit with Starbucks.

This Woods Hole Hostel is a pretty cool little place. It’s almost like a farmstead. They’ve got some cold frames out front where they’re growing various greens. They’ve got pigs, ducks, chickens, and I saw a few bee hives. For accommodations, they’ve got a bunkhouse for hikers, as well as a few rooms within the house (we’re actually in one of the rooms in the house). They’d normally do a communal meal for breakfast and dinner, but their oven is broken, which means no breakfast in the morning, which is too bad because we’ve heard their food is really good.

Hopefully a night in a real bed will start to heal our feet, and we can make it to Daleville by Thursday of next week.
