We got the day started pretty early today, as we wanted to cover the planned 20 miles as early as we could. We were on the trail a bit after 7am.
It was a much cooler day today than it has been and very windy. We hiked up to the top of Apple Orchard mountain, and it felt like the whole mountain was wavering with the strong winds. When we stopped for lunch on top of Highcock Knob, we put jackets on because it was so cool.
For a 20 mile day, we actually felt pretty good at the end of it. The trail wasn’t too tough today, and there really weren’t any major climbs. We kind of lucked out in getting into Glasgow, VA. We hit the parking area just off the road, and started trying to hitch with very little luck. Then a kind older couple who had just completed their hike asked where we were headed and offered up a ride. It was especially kind because Glasgow was in the opposite direction from where they were heading.
We’re staying in our tent in town tonight, which I know sounds odd. There’s actually a whole shelter set up here in town for hikers, with plenty of room for tenting. There’s port-o-lets, power for charging phones, and even a hot shower. It’s also conveniently located right near an Italian restaurant, where we ate way too much pasta. It’s a little strange tenting just off the main drag in town, but there are a lot of other hikers here, so we’re in good company.
