Day 72: 6/20/16 (Virtual AT 2020 Day 79)

Not only was today the first day of summer (and it really felt like it out there)  but it was a big milestone day for us. Right at the end of our day, we reached 1000 miles on the Appalachian Trail. We were pretty tired by the time we got there, but it felt pretty good nonetheless.

We got an early start today, right around 7 am. The first 13 miles or so of the day were just great. We hiked through Sky Meadows State Park, which featured big, nicely graded trail, and a few nice open spaces. By about noon, we had hiked about 13 miles, and entered a stretch of trail that’s called the Rollercoaster. It’s called the Rollercoaster because it’s about 13 miles of short, steep ups and downs. We only covered about 9 miles of it today, but we climbed up and down 8 sizeable hills, all about 500 foot elevation gains and losses. Then there are a few sections of the Rollercoaster that have a bunch of rocks to contend with, adding an extra degree of difficulty. We had our lunch after the first hill, then we attacked the rest. To be honest, it wasn’t as bad as many people warned. There was plenty of water available (which was key on this hot day) so we didn’t have to carry a lot. It was within the Rollercoaster where we hit 1000 miles.

We ended our day at the Bear’s Den hostel. They’ve got a great hiker deal where for $30 you get a bunk, shower, laundry, a pizza, a soda, and a pint of Ben and Jerry’s ice cream…. and make your own pancakes in the morning. This place is owned by the ATC, and operated by the PATC.  Needless to say, we’re now relaxing with full bellies, and we’re clean, which always feels great. We’ll be getting out early tomorrow with the goal of hitting Harper’s Ferry, about 20 miles away.
