So last night we had a little visitor to our tent. We had the tent fly only halfway on, so we could see what was going on outside the tent. Around 1:30am I heard a sniffing and rustling. I looked up and I see a black and white creature making its way right towards our tent. I whisper, “there’s a skunk right outside our tent” and we remained quiet, watching as he approached the edge of the vestibule. The skunk dug up the tent stake holding the vestibule flap and it was briefly startled when the flap collapsed. Thankfully it wasn’t too startled and continued its exploring. It wandered over to the other side of the tent, my side, where it dug up the stake not more than 6 inches away from my head. After that it crawled over my pack, then under the vestibule, and finally wandered away. It came back again for a final visit around 3:30am, but didn’t stay long because we decided to make just a bit more noise to let it know we were there, and it finally went back into the woods.
Needless to say we were a bit tired on the hike, but we only had to cover 12 miles. It wasn’t too difficult and we covered those miles quickly. We walked into Poughquag, NY and got a few slices of pizza at Pleasant Ridge Pizzaria. Not long after we were picked up by Bear Bell’s mother, and we were off to Pennsylvania for a few zero days with family.
The next few posts will be light, in fact I’m going to cover the two zero days in a single post, but we’ll be back on the trail on Monday.
