Today was another slack packing day, and my sister-in-law let us park her car out at a trail head to end at so we could get ourselves back to the condo. Michelle drove us back to the Lyme-Dorchester road trail head where we began our hike up Smarts mountain. Michelle joined us for the climb again. It was a nice climb, with a few fun rocky scrambles.
At the top of Smarts Mountain there was a fire tower which recently had a few renovations, so we climbed up to get a nice view above the trees. It was a nice day with just a few clouds, so we got some excellent views. We enjoyed a little snack with Michelle before she headed back down to her car to drive home. Thanks again to Michelle for driving us around and helping us out with mail drops and whatnot.
We had one more mountain to climb over before the day was over… Cube Mountain. This was another interesting climb with a lot of open rocky ledges on top, providing us with more great views for our lunch break.
We finished up the hike for the day with a little trail magic in the woods from a guy who hangs out by a sign that says, “Welcome to the Whites.” We had a banana and a bit of water, chatted for a bit about all the hikers he’s met, then finished our last 3 miles, which brought us to 19 miles total for the day. One the drive back we took a little pit stop in Warren, NH at Moose Scoops for some much deserved ice cream. It was one of the best software serve ice cream cones I’ve ever had. One other interesting notes about Warren, NH is that there’s a Redstone missile standing in the center of town. Apparently it was brought to town by a local who thought it would be good for the kids of the small town to get an up close look at America’s space program. The missile is an interesting oddity in the middle of the otherwise bucolic little town of Warren.
